CHAPTER ELEVEN

Clay looked at his assembled command group the next morning. The sun was not fully up but the entire convoy had been roused awake, had been fed and were on full alert. Vehicles were already idling, preparing to move out. Clay had decided to press on even if it rained again, refusing to stay in Fayetteville any longer.

They would not, however, leave until someone came looking to claim the four dead bodies across the parking lot. Clay would report them to whatever authorities the town might have, even if it was just the mayor herself. Once that was done, the convoy would be on the move.

Even as the thought finished, he saw a number of people making their way down the street from the fairgrounds next door. The mayor herself was near the front but apparently, she wasn’t the leader. The leader appeared to be a large man in what honestly looked as if it was once a set of wrestling gear, though with something akin to yoga pants beneath it.

“I was under the impression that those garments were for women,” Xavier observed. “Was I incorrect in that? Anyone?”

“Nope,” Heather replied, making the ‘p’ as a popping sound when she did.

“I see,” Xavier frowned. “So, this…gentleman, then, is one of those individuals who choose to wear the clothing of the opposite sex? What are they called, again?”

“Transexuals”, Clay replied. “Or crossdressers. And I’m going to assume, mostly for my own peace of mine at this point, that he’s just wearing those to cover his legs and stay warm.”

“Ah, yes,” Xavier nodded at that. “Yes, I can see that. Excellent observation.”

“Are we killing people here, or not?” Zach asked, with about as much emotion as Xavier had just used to ask about crossdressers.

“Let’s not if we don’t have to,” Clay answered him without looking. “Just the same, Heather, I think it’s time for you to mount up,” he indicated Scouting Five, the nearest armored vehicle. “Raven, you go with her and provide whatever assistance or cover she may need and defend the vehicle. Do not leave the vehicle unless it’s more dangerous to remain. Ensure that all crew weapons are manned and ready and that the opposite side of the convoy is properly covered,” he ordered Faron Gillis. “You’re in command there until this is settled.”

“Sir,” Faron nodded once and took off at a run.

“Kurtis, I think now would be a good time for you to be atop one of these trailers,” Clay continued after a few seconds, watching the crowd grow closer. There had to be over a hundred people there.

“Got it, Boss,” Kurtis replied, heading for the nearest trailer.

“You know, I’m the one who killed ‘em,” Titus whispered. “It’ll be me they want.”

“Yeah, well, people in hell want ice water,” Clay growled. “You stay shut unless I tell you otherwise. Don’t give them anything. I want to see how they justify this. We’ll fish a little.” And then their time was up.

“Mayor,” Clay nodded politely. “You folks are out early.
